New Recipe: Guacamole

23 03 2010

017. Try out 50 new recipes (2/50) [more info]

I’d never made my own guacamole before and found myself with some ripe avocados and sour cream today that needed to be used up… so guacamole it was.

My best friend often makes it for parties and I was partly inspired by her – she uses a myriad of tastes and spices in her dishes and her dips always taste unique and delicious. So I channelled a little Marisa magic into my cooking tonight and mixed mashed two avocados with a couple of tablespoons of sour cream, lemon juice, a little lime, salt and pepper, then mixed in a chopped tomato (the last of my bag from St Andrews market).

And the verdict? Matt (the hubby) said it was delicious although he could have done with a little more salt – I tend to under-season most food, but that’s mainly because I don’t like my food too salty. I really enjoyed it and, despite it being a simple recipe, was proud enough of my endeavour to post it and count the effort towards fulfilling my recipe goal. 🙂

018. Eat French Toast in five different cafes

19 01 2010

When will I have achieved this goal? When I eat French Toast in five different Melbourne cafes and blogged about each one.

Why did I choose this goal? I love French Toast (and pretty much all breakfast foods), especially served with bacon and cinnamon. After falling in love with the French Toast from a cafe in Christchurch, New Zealand in 2009, I’m determined to find its counterpart in Melbourne.

017. Try out 50 new recipes

19 01 2010

When will I have achieved this goal? When I complete and blog about 50 new recipes I make from scratch (can be cooking/baking, all manner of edible recipes).

Why did I choose this goal? Variety is the spice of life, I’m always looking to improve my cooking and to discover new techniques and recipes that I can add to my regular repetoire.

016. Try three new cheeses

19 01 2010

When will I have achieved this goal? When I try (and blog about) three new cheeses.

Why did I choose this goal? I tend to stick to the same kind of cheeses – mainly cheddar, a little haloumi, cream cheese… My husband is a big cheese lover and has been trying to coax me into trying some of his favourites for years. I’ve been stubborn and it’s time to give some new-to-me varieties a chance!

015. Take a cake decorating class

19 01 2010

When will I have achieved this goal? When I successfully complete a class (or series of classes).

Why did I choose this goal? To learn new ideas and practice techniques for decorating all manner of sweet treats (and I love my sweet treats).

014. Learn to make homemade ice-cream

19 01 2010

When will I have achieved this goal? When I make homemade ice-cream with success (even if it’s not on the first attempt).

Why did I choose this goal? Because it’s tasty and decadent… I really want to challenge myself!

013. Bake a loaf of bread from scratch

19 01 2010

When will I have achieved this goal? When I bake a loaf of bread from scratch and blog about it.

Why did I choose this goal? Because freshly-baked bread smells and tastes fantastic! I don’t have a breadmaker so this will be from scratch.
